My Inspirations
1. The Bible. Many of my works, especially my sculptural pieces, carry a Christian theme or point of view, based on books or themes in the Bible.
2. Nature. It's just amazing how every tiny and intimate detail in everything from the HUGE planets and the galaxies, to Earth; the photosynthesis of the trees and the workings of the human body; to the catepillars and their transformation to butterflies; to cells, to atoms... have all been perfectly designed to work and create living things and creatures. Yet there are still things we don't even know exist yet! But what beauties we can capture with our eyes, or in our hands, in an image, or an artwork or a textbook, we can truely say, are wonderfully and fearlessly made.
3. Woodwork artist J Christopher White makes these gorgeous wood sculptures and accompanies them with Christian poems. Love that. Likewise, my pieces are inspired by scripture and are sometimes displayed with it written beside it, on it, or in the title.
Jeffro Uitto is also an inspiration of mine, with his technique of collecting beach driftwood and making exquisite furniture from it. He uses his own handmade tools and altered machinery. I too salvage my materials, but from farms and bushlands.
4. Black and white photographer Max Dupain is a great inspiration for my photography work. In Dupain's beach, still life and landscape photography, he focuses on the shapes, lines, shadows and perspectives of the subject.
"One also needs an old seeing eye, appropriate reflexes which
embrace sensitive observations
coupled with appropriate
emotional responses."
- Max Dupain
